Published September 8, 2026

What to check before removing duplicate lines from a list. For the full explanation, see How to Remove Duplicate Lines From a List.

Checklist

  • Decide whether the comparison should be case-sensitive (“Apple” vs “apple”).
  • Decide whether to trim leading/trailing whitespace before comparing.
  • Decide whether to keep the first occurrence or the last.
  • Keep a backup of the original list; deduplication is not reversible without one.
  • Decide whether blank lines should be treated as duplicates of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing duplicates preserve the original order?

Most tools keep the first occurrence of each line and remove later repeats, preserving the original order of what remains.

Should I trim whitespace before comparing?

Yes. Without trimming, “apple” and “apple ” (with a trailing space) are treated as different lines and won’t be caught as duplicates.
