What Is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data as a grid of black and white squares. Unlike a traditional barcode, which only reads in one direction, a QR code packs information both horizontally and vertically, letting it hold far more data — a full web address, a block of text, or Wi-Fi login details — in a small printable square.

How QR Codes Work

A scanning app or camera locates the three distinctive squares in three corners of the code to figure out its orientation, then reads the grid of modules in between to reconstruct the encoded data. Built into that data is error-correction information, so a QR code can still scan correctly even if part of it is smudged, torn, or covered by a small logo.

How to Create a QR Code

  1. Choose what you want to encode: a URL, plain text, an email, a phone number, or Wi-Fi details.
  2. Fill in the fields for that type.
  3. Click Generate QR Code.
  4. Download the PNG, or copy/share it directly where your browser supports it.

Common QR Code Uses

QR Codes for Websites

Print a QR code on a flyer, business card, or product label so anyone with a phone camera can jump straight to your website without typing a URL.

QR Codes for Wi-Fi

Share your Wi-Fi network without reciting a password out loud or writing it on a sticky note — guests scan the code and their phone offers to join the network automatically.

QR Codes for Contact Information

An email or phone QR code lets someone start a message or call with a single scan instead of manually entering your details.
