What Is a Pace Converter?

A pace converter translates a time-per-distance measurement, like the minutes it takes to run one kilometer, into a different distance unit. Unlike speed (distance per time), pace is time per distance, and it's conventionally written and read as minutes and seconds rather than a plain decimal number.

How to Convert Pace

  1. Enter your pace as minutes:seconds (e.g. 5:30) or as a decimal number of minutes (e.g. 5.5).
  2. Select the distance unit you are converting from.
  3. Select the distance unit you are converting to.
  4. Read the converted pace, shown in MM:SS format.

Pace Units Explained

Min/Km & Min/Mile

The two most common ways runners and cyclists express pace. A mile is 1.609344 kilometers, so a min/km pace always converts to a larger min/mile number for the same speed, since a mile is a longer distance.

Min/500m (Rowing Split)

Rowing ergometers display pace per 500 meters, commonly called a "split." A 2:00 split means covering 500 meters every 2 minutes.

Sec/100m (Swimming Pace)

Swimmers typically track pace per 100 meters, still written in MM:SS format (e.g. 1:05 per 100m) even though the unit name says "seconds."

Why Pace Uses MM:SS Instead of a Decimal

A pace of "5.5 minutes per kilometer" is easy to misread as 5 minutes 5 seconds instead of 5 minutes 30 seconds, since the digits after the decimal point are a fraction of a minute (60 seconds), not a fraction of 100. Writing pace as MM:SS avoids that ambiguity, which is why this converter accepts and displays pace in that format by default while still accepting a plain decimal as a convenience.

When Do You Need a Pace Converter?

Pace conversions come up when training plans list target paces in a unit different from your GPS watch's display, comparing your running pace to a friend's using a different distance unit, converting a rowing machine split into an equivalent running pace, or planning race splits for an event measured in miles when you train in kilometers (or vice versa).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Convert your pace to seconds per kilometer, multiply by 1.609344 to get seconds per mile, then convert back to MM:SS. This converter does that automatically — just select min/km as "From" and min/mile as "To".

What does a rowing "split" mean?

A rowing split is pace per 500 meters (min/500m), the standard way rowing ergometers display pace.

How is swim pace usually written?

Swim pace is typically written per 100 meters in MM:SS format, for example 1:05 per 100m.

Why can't I enter 0:00 as a pace?

A pace of zero would mean covering the distance in no time at all — an infinite speed, which isn't physically meaningful. Enter a pace greater than zero.

Can I enter pace as a decimal instead of MM:SS?

Yes. Entering "5.5" is read as 5.5 minutes, which is the same as 5:30.

How do I find my pace from a race time?

Divide your total race time by the distance. For a 5K finished in 27:30, divide 27 minutes 30 seconds by 5 to get a pace of 5:30 per kilometer, then enter that here to convert it to other units.
