What Is the Median?

The median is the middle value of a data set once it's sorted from smallest to largest. It's a "type of average," like the mean, but it describes a data set differently: instead of being calculated from every value, it's simply whichever value ends up in the middle position, which makes it far less sensitive to a single extreme outlier than the mean is.

How to Calculate the Median

Formula

Odd count: the middle value. Even count: average of the two middle values.

Example (odd count)

Numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

Step 1 — Sort: already sorted: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

Step 2 — Find the middle: 5 numbers, so the 3rd value is the middle: 5

Therefore, the median is 5.

Example (even count)

Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4

Step 1 — Sort: already sorted: 1, 2, 3, 4

Step 2 — Find the two middle values: 2 and 3

Step 3 — Average them: (2 + 3) ÷ 2 = 2.5

Therefore, the median is 2.5.

Median vs. Mean

The mean adds every value together and divides by the count, so one very large or very small value can pull it noticeably in that direction. The median only depends on which value ends up in the middle after sorting, so it stays put even if an outlier gets much larger or smaller — which is why household income and home prices are usually reported as medians rather than means.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the median?

The median is the middle value in a list of numbers once they're sorted from smallest to largest. Unlike the mean (the ordinary average), it isn't pulled around by a single unusually large or small value, which makes it a useful measure when a data set has outliers.

How is the median calculated for an odd number of values?

Sort the values, then take the one exactly in the middle. For 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 (5 values), the middle value is the 3rd one: 5.

How is the median calculated for an even number of values?

Sort the values, then average the two middle ones. For 1, 2, 3, 4 (4 values), the two middle values are 2 and 3, so the median is (2 + 3) ÷ 2 = 2.5.

Does the order I enter numbers in matter?

No. This calculator sorts your values automatically before finding the median, so you can enter them in any order.

What's the difference between median and mean?

The mean adds every value together and divides by the count; the median is the middle value once sorted. A few extremely large or small values can shift the mean a lot but barely affect the median, which is why median is often preferred for things like income or home prices.

Can I enter negative or decimal numbers?

Yes, both are fully supported.

Do duplicate values affect the median?

They're counted normally, like any other value — duplicates aren't removed before sorting.
