How to Calculate a Discount

To find out how much a discount is worth in real money, multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100.

Formula

Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100

Example

Original price: $200
Discount: 25%
$200 × 25 ÷ 100 = $50
Therefore, you save $50.
Final price: $200 − $50 = $150

How to Calculate the Final Price After a Discount

Once you know the discount amount, subtract it from the original price to get what you'll actually pay.

Formula

Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

Example

Original price: $200
Discount: 25%
Discount amount: $50
Final price: $200 − $50 = $150

How to Calculate the Discount Percentage

If you know the original price and the sale price but not the discount percentage, subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100.

Formula

((Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100

Example

Original price: $200
Sale price: $150
(($200 − $150) ÷ $200) × 100 = 25%
Therefore, the discount is 25%.

Discount vs. Sale Price: What's the Difference?

These four terms get used interchangeably, but each one means something specific:

Original Price

The price before any discount is applied — what the item would normally cost.

Discount Percentage

How big the reduction is, shown as a percentage of the original price — for example, "25% off."

Discount Amount

The reduction converted into real money — how much is actually taken off the original price.

Sale Price (Final Price)

What you actually pay: the original price minus the discount amount. This is the number on the receipt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a discount calculator?

A discount calculator works out how much you save and what you'll pay after a percentage discount is applied to a price — or works backward from a sale price to find the discount percentage or the original price.

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100: Original Price × Discount % ÷ 100. For example, 25% off $200 is $200 × 25 ÷ 100 = $50.

How do I calculate the final price after a discount?

Subtract the discount amount from the original price: Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount. $200 with a $50 discount comes to $150.

How do I calculate what percentage discount I received?

Divide the amount saved by the original price, then multiply by 100: ((Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100. Saving $50 on a $200 item is a 25% discount.

How do I calculate a 20% discount?

Multiply the price by 20, then divide by 100 to get the amount off — for a $100 item that's $100 × 20 ÷ 100 = $20 off, for a final price of $80.

Can a discount calculator work with decimal prices?

Yes. This calculator accepts decimal prices and discount percentages and rounds the results to two decimal places, the same way a receipt would.

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). An $80 sale price after a 20% discount means the original price was $80 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = $100.
