Why the Years/Months/Days Breakdown Is Trickier

Unlike a fixed unit like days, “a month” varies in length, so the years/months/days breakdown depends on which specific months the calculation passes through. The same total number of days can produce a slightly different years/months/days breakdown depending on the exact starting date, since some month-pairs in the range are longer than others.

Common Mistakes

• Expecting the years/months/days breakdown to match a simple days-divided-by-30 estimate. Because months vary in length, the actual breakdown rarely lines up exactly with that kind of rough approximation.
• Assuming two date ranges with the same total days always break down identically. Which specific months fall within the range affects the years/months/days split, even when the total day count is the same.
• Mixing up “months apart” with “difference in month numbers.” January to March isn’t automatically “2 months” if the day-of-month values don’t align; the exact days matter too, as shown in the worked example above.
