Energy shows up under several different unit names depending on where you encounter it: calories on a nutrition label, kilowatt-hours on an electricity bill, joules in a physics class, BTUs on an air conditioner. They all measure the same underlying quantity, just scaled and labeled differently by convention.
Energy is the capacity to do work or produce heat. The SI unit of energy is the joule, but everyday contexts often use other units that are more convenient for their specific purpose.
This is one of the most common energy mix-ups: the “Calories” printed on a food label are actually kilocalories (capital-C “Calorie” is the food-industry convention for 1,000 small calories), not the small calorie used in some chemistry contexts. A “200 Calorie” snack is 200 kcal, or 200,000 small calories.
