In everyday conversation, “weight” and “mass” are used interchangeably, and for most daily purposes, that’s harmless. But they describe genuinely different things, and understanding the distinction helps make sense of units like kilograms, pounds, and ounces.
Mass is the amount of matter an object contains. It’s measured in kilograms or grams, and it stays the same no matter where the object is: on Earth, on the Moon, or floating in space.
Weight is technically the force acting on an object due to gravity, measured in newtons in the scientific (SI) system. Weight depends on the strength of gravity where the object is, so the same object weighs less on the Moon than on Earth, even though its mass hasn’t changed.
In everyday language, and even on a bathroom scale, “weight” almost always really means mass: a scale reports kilograms or pounds, not newtons. This guide uses “weight” the way most people do in daily life, while keeping the underlying distinction clear where it matters.

For everyday use, rounding to “1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb” is close enough. For anything precise, such as recipes that need to scale accurately, shipping weights, or scientific work, use the fuller factor, since small rounding errors add up.
Example: 100 g ÷ 28.349523125 ≈ 3.53 oz.
An object’s mass (the actual amount of matter in it) never changes, no matter where it is. Its weight, however, depends on how strongly gravity is pulling on it. The Moon’s gravity is roughly a sixth of Earth’s, so an object that weighs 60 kg-force on Earth would weigh the equivalent of about 10 kg-force on the Moon, while its mass is still 60 kg in both places.
